BIBA GREEN BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD

We are honoured to have been officially recognised as ‘Green Business of the Year’ at this year’s prestigious Be Inspired Business Awards, (The BIBAs).

The BIBAs are a celebration of pioneering companies and entrepreneurs with headquarters in Lancashire. We were recognised for our unwavering commitment to sustainability that has been embedded into our design, manufacturing, and operations for over four decades.

Years before it became fashionable, we installed a biomass boiler which uses waste from our manufacturing to heat our factory. And 14 years ago, we led the march on sustainability within the furniture industry by setting up our own recycling and remanufacturing service called Sustain, which has now grown into a business in its own right.

We have always had a responsible approach to both sourcing materials and our waste management, choosing to reduce and reuse before recycling. Looking back at the last year, we have made good progress in our pledge to become carbon net zero at our UK manufacturing sites by 2030.

Last year, our carbon emissions went down by 4.5%, a total reduction of over 25% since 2019. Through the installation of solar panels, we increased our site based renewable energy by an incredible 1800% and 100% of our waste was diverted from landfill. Through Sustain, the Group recycled 4399 tonnes of material which is the equivalent of 28 average houses.

Our passion for the environment is embedded in our culture. Led by our environmental steering committee, 900 of our colleagues engaged in a sustainability roadshow which generated over 250 bright ideas.

Through our commitment to biodiversity, we installed 3 honeybee hives at one of our sites in Altham and trained a team of our people to be beekeepers. We also joined forces with the Ribble Rivers Trust to initiate a woodland planting project – working together over five days to plant a staggering 15,000 trees on land owned by the Mustoe family.
