Golf is the chosen sport of our founder and Chairman Colin Mustoe MBE, who chose to begin sponsoring Birkenhead-born Paul Waring just before he joined Qualifying School in 2007.
Just days before the final, Paul made history, hitting the ‘best shot of his life.’ His round of 61 was the lowest of his career and his 19-under total after 36 holes, was the lowest in relation to par in DP World Tour history.
The Championship’s star studded leaderboard included some of the DP World Tour’s biggest names, including two-time winner Tommy Fleetwood, former Open winner Shane Lowry and world number-3 Rory McIllroy. Paul put himself into position with a course record 11-under-par in the second round - but saw a five-shot lead dwindle to just one after the third-round. He reclaimed the lead with a 40ft birdie putt on the 17th and hit another at the last, to close his sensational win.
Speaking of his victory, Paul, who was a little overwhelmed, said:
39-year old Paul, who is now living in Dubai, has the opportunity of playing as a dual member on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour and Sunday's triumph also sealed him a place at The Open Championship next year. He now ranks fifth in the Race to Dubai and banked $1.53 million in prize money.
The Senator Group also sponsors 26-year old professional golfer Alice Hewson, who claimed her first Ladies European Tour title with a play-off victory at the Swiss Open earlier this year.
